Chronic
Pelvic Pain
Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) is a condition lasting longer than 6 months whereby the patient experiences recurrent or persistent episodes of pain experienced in the pelvic region, abdomen, pelvic floor or pelvic organs. Often CPP is diagnosed in the absence of other pathology.
Chronic pelvic pain is different for every person, the pain may come and go and can be aggravated by activities of daily living, penetrative intercourse, bladder or bowel motions and menstruation.
Common CPP conditions that we see include:
Endometriosis
Coccydynia
Vulvodynia
Vestibulodynia
Vaginismus
Dyspareunia
Bladder Pain Syndrome
Interstitial Cystitis
Anorectal Pain
Pudendal Neuralgia
Proctalgia Fugax
Pelvic Girdle Pain
As Physio’s trained in Women’s Health, we see a lot of pelvic pain. CPP can be complex to treat so it is important to cover all aspects of the patients journey, including medical, biomechanical and psychosocial factors.
In many cases we will work alongside other health practitioners to assist us in the management of CPP due to its complex nature. Pelvic physiotherapy can be highly effective in treating and managing these conditions so get in contact with one of our physiotherapists if this sounds like something you are experiencing.
Physiotherapy treatment may consist of the following:
Mindfulness and breathing
Pelvic floor muscle down training and desensitisation
Graduated pelvic floor release and manual therapy
Graduated dilator therapy
Musculoskeletal assessment and treatment of the lumbar spine, pelvis and thorax
Defecation dynamics to improve bowel and bladder function
